The first independent flag of India was hoisted in 1930 in Chittagong. The result of the Chittagong armoury raid, school teacher Surya Sen led this revolution along with his young students and followers. On the 18th of April 1930, Surya Sen conducted his plan to raid the police station and other auxiliary forces in Chittagong in an attempt to take over the arms stationed there.
Surya Sen was born on 22nd March 1894 in Raozan of Chittagong. He was popularly called the MASTER DA. His father, Ramaniranjan Sen was a teacher as well. Surya Sen became interested in revolutionary ideals which led him to join a revolutionary organisation Anushilan Samity.
His main plan in the revolution included seizing arms for the armoury, breaking all sorts of communication system such as telephones, telegraphs, which would lead to the isolation of Chittagong from the rest of British India. Though they managed to sack some arms, they failed to take over the bullets, bombs or other explosives. Soon the revolutionary group was cornered by the British troops at the near by Jalalabad hills. During this time twelve revolutionaries died, mostly were arrested and some fled including Sen.📷
Sen continued hiding from the British. He moved from one place to another, sometimes worked as a farmer, priest or even a house worker. In February 1933, he was captured by the British police while hiding in a man called Netra Sen’s house. Sen was then hanged to death and was given a burial at the sea.
