Summer’s up! It’s been almost a month since school started and we’re all busy settling
back into our overdecorated routines. While most of us have had the pleasure of taking
long naps on weekdays and binge watching our favourite tv series during the summer
holidays, the students of grade eleven (now in grade twelve) experienced something
completely dissimilar.
After the completion of their AS Level exams, 30 students from the Scholastica Uttara
campus got assigned to different firms to serve as interns.
The Summer Internship Programme is an arrangement that has allowed the students of
Scholastica to explore their skills beyond school boundaries for the last 8 years.
Students get selected by the school counsellors based on their merit, interests and
grades. Though each internship is about 20 days long, a lot of time, thought and effort is
invested for this procedure, before they’re actually sent off. The group of organisations
that are involved is truly a diverse one and each student’s personality is carefully
examined in order to find a sector that suits them best. These include radio stations,
advertisement firms, hospitals and even sectors of the United Nations.
Benefits provided by these internship programs are numerous. Not only do they enrich
the students’ college applications but the knowledge and experience they gain through
this, is extremely valuable. One’s wisdom and talent are rather pointless if he cannot
execute his ideas efficiently in practical scenarios and this is something the students
have learned through the course of this summer. Each firm provided a unique experience
and the students were engaged in several different activities. While some were out
making pitches for business ideas, others at a different organisation were taking
interviews of customers at malls. The students actively communicated with other
coworkers and thoroughly researched when they were required to in order to increase
productivity.
Here’s what some of them had to say about their
experience:
“In the course of this internship program we have gained knowledge of how officials work
closely along with each other in an institution, we have experienced the challenges
overcome each day, something we are about to encounter in a few years”
(Abrar Mahir Rakin, Jaago Foundation)
“I was assigned in the bichemistry and microbiology lab. The first day was a bit hectic as I
had to go through the lab protocols and strictly follow it. I learned about different
bacterial strain and how they are cultured. After an experiment is done, I leant how the
apparatus is cleaned to avoid contamination. Also surviving long hours of work without any
companion was a big challenge too but it was a wonderful experience”
(Syeda Arunima Suvechha, IUB)
“Working at Dhaka Tribune over the summer was an extremely valuable experience. I
learnt the ins and outs of journalism and print cycles. My supervisors were very supportive
and it was actually fun working there. I was treated like a co worker and not as a kid, given
responsibilities and deadlines. Besides learning how to write proper articles I also learnt
values like punctuality and professionalism. I wouldn’t have spent my summer any other
way.”
(Orni Hasan, Dhaka Tribune)
Not everybody’s experience was all rainbows and butterflies, but at the end of the day,
even they realised that this is how real life works. All in all, we can conclude that it was
an extraordinary summer for the 30 participants and they earned invaluable
experience which will help them for years to come.
